Wimbledon Adopts Video Challenge System for the First Time.

The Championships tennis court with replay technology

Wimbledon will follow the US and Aussie Opens in implementing replay systems.

Video review systems will make its debut at Wimbledon in the upcoming tournament.

Athletes are granted the ability to contest specific decisions from the chair umpire, mirroring the practice already in place at each of the American Grand Slam and the Australian Open.

This innovation will be accessible on Centre Court and the number one court throughout the tournament and on the other four featured courts when they are hosting singles contests.

This development follows just a season following the AELTC implemented ELC, which terminated the centuries-old role of line officials.

Reviewable Decisions

Competitors will not be permitted to challenge the call of the electronic line calling, but are allowed to request the umpire to review specific decisions, including:

  • If a ball has bounced twice.
  • Whether a ball touched an rival's racket or person on the way past.
  • Possible hindrance end of a point.

Importantly, there will be an unlimited number on the number of challenges a player can initiate.

A Recent Example

An illustrative example occurred in Indian Wells last week, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the video challenge against Jack Draper.

The British player conceded it was a tough situation for the official, but believed his rival had "used the regulations quite well."

Official Aurelie Tourte watched a replay and determined Draper was responsible for hindrance, granting the point to his opponent.

Broader Adoption

This technology are not exclusive to major tournaments. It has been in use at the American major since 2023 and the Australian Open this year.

Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the women’s WTA Tour, and by the coming year the ATP circuit will have the system in place at every one of its events.

Additional Innovations

A further change at Wimbledon 2025 involves the addition of graphical cues on displays to complement the audio calls from the ELC system.

This addresses situations where spectators have sometimes been uncertain whether a ball was out or in.

In other news, with exactly 100 days remaining until the beginning of the tournament, the AELTC have further revealed an increase in daily attendance at the qualifiers in Roehampton.
